Rheem Reveals What Contractors Want in Products

Rheem, a leading manufacturer of air- and water-heating products, has been at the forefront of innovation since its founding in 1925. The company has earned a reputation among contractors for performance, reliability, and sustainability. With over 50 brands under its parent company, Rheem continues to push the boundaries of product design and hydronic trends.

Patrick McLaughlin, a Product Manager at Rheem, recently spoke about the challenge of balancing product simplicity with the growing demand for connected, high-efficiency equipment. According to McLaughlin, Rheem’s approach is to handle complexity internally through intelligent controls and diagnostics, while presenting contractors with clear interfaces and logical menus.

Rheem’s products, such as the Rheem FT Series and IBC boilers, are designed to deliver advanced performance while remaining straightforward to install, commission, and service. McLaughlin emphasized that high-efficiency and connectivity should enhance simplicity, not work against it.

McLaughlin also discussed the future of the hydronics market, noting that high-efficiency hydronic heating is undergoing rapid change driven by tightening energy regulations and increased focus on lifecycle operating costs. Within the boiler market, they expect continued growth in condensing and modulating boilers, particularly flexible platforms that serve residential and light-commercial applications.

Boilers such as Rheem ThermaForce are increasingly specified for projects requiring scalability, redundancy, and integration into larger mechanical systems. Contractors are seeking equipment that can adapt to a wide variety of applications, including hybrid systems and multi-boiler cascades.

One of the key factors driving these changes is the need for remote monitoring and management capabilities. The IBC V-10 Portal, for example, provides secure remote access for monitoring and managing IBC boilers, allowing contractors to view real-time system performance, receive error and alert notifications, and diagnose issues remotely.

Contractor feedback has been instrumental in shaping Rheem’s product design decisions. Contractors consistently emphasize the importance of ease of installation, serviceability, and long-term reliability. This feedback has directly influenced design decisions across the Rheem and IBC boiler portfolios.

Rheem has also focused on platform continuity, using shared components and common SKUs across product lines whenever possible. This approach allows contractors to stock fewer parts, rely on a single brand for replacements, and service multiple models with confidence.

The hydronics market will continue to evolve, with an emphasis on high-efficiency, connectivity, and remote monitoring capabilities. With its strong focus on product design, contractor feedback, and technical support, Rheem is well-positioned to meet the changing needs of the market.
