The ENERGY STAR label guarantees a window meets strict performance benchmarks set by the Environmental Protection Agency. Certification requires passing tests in independent labs, not just manufacturer claims.
The two key metrics are the U-factor and Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC). The U-factor, measured on a scale from 0.20 to 1.20, indicates how well a window prevents heat from escaping. Lower numbers mean better insulation. Homeowners in cold climates should aim for a U-factor below 0.30.
SHGC, on a scale from 0 to 1, shows how much solar heat passes through the glass. Lower values block more heat, which matters most in hot climates. A rating of 0.25 or less is ideal for southern states, while colder regions may prefer 0.40 or higher to capture free winter warmth.
The U.S. is divided into four climate zones, each with its own ENERGY STAR requirements. Northern states like Minnesota and Maine need windows with a U-factor of 0.30 or less to retain heat. Southern states like Florida and Hawaii prioritize a low SHGC—0.25 or below—to block solar heat.
In between, the North-Central and South-Central zones balance both metrics. Ohio and Nebraska require a U-factor of 0.30 or less but allow moderate solar heat gain. Texas and Tennessee focus more on blocking heat while still providing insulation for occasional cold snaps.

Glass technology also affects performance. Double-pane windows create an insulating pocket between glass sheets, while low-emissivity (low-e) coatings block heat while allowing light to pass through. Some models use specialized tints or microscopic metal coatings to further reduce solar heat gain without darkening the room.
