Rustic Yet Refined Log Cabin on Idaho River

A log-clad retreat in McCall, Idaho, sits on five wooded acres along a quiet river, blending rugged materials with refined details. Designed by Pearson Design Group, the home uses log construction, reclaimed timber, and native stone to mirror the forest’s seasonal rhythms. Built by Todd Allen Construction, it was created for owners with lifelong ties to Idaho who wanted a place that feels natural and livable year-round.

The architecture follows the site’s contours, opening toward the river while enclosing more intimate spaces within layers of wood and stone. Oversized windows bring the outdoors in without sacrificing energy performance. Every room opens generously to the surrounding pines, making the forest feel like part of the floor plan rather than a backdrop.

The home has five bedrooms.

Sunlit window seats sit alongside a moody, club-like lower lounge. The retreat offers a mix of light and shadow, open gathering and quiet corners.

A great room anchored by Montana moss rock

The living room’s focal point is a fireplace built from Montana moss rock with a 13-ton hearthstone. The space is furnished with a sectional and armchairs from Sixpenny, pillows from Ralph Lauren Home, and a custom chandelier by ADG Lighting. A round side table from Obsolete completes the arrangement.

The dining room features a custom-fabricated table by Petersen Antiques. Above it hangs a ceramic pendant light by Natalie Page for BDDW. A stone fireplace anchors the room, giving it weight and warmth.

In the kitchen, a concrete island stands with counter stools from Palecek. Overlooking the kitchen is an indoor terrace and game room, accessible from an upstairs bedroom. A breakfast nook with a built-in banquette, custom table, and antique chairs offers a spot for casual meals.

There is a long hallway where the runner was sourced from Lawrence Of La Brea.

A detached guest suite and spa-like owner’s bathroom

A detached guest suite includes a canopy bed from Restoration Hardware, dressed in linens from Shoppe Amber Interiors.

A vintage bench sits at the foot of the bed.

The owner’s suite has floor-to-ceiling windows, linen armchairs by Sixpenny, and window treatments from Élitis linen.

The owner’s bathroom feels like a spa. The vanity is custom-crafted from reclaimed Wisconsin barnwood — the same material used in the raftered ceilings of the great room. Concrete flooring is heated. A freestanding concrete tub by Native Trails sits with fittings from Waterworks.

One bedroom has built-in wooden bunk beds for overnight guests.

The design extends downstairs to a lounge with a bar and billiards.
